Get Ready, Get Set, Cast On!

My casting on will be somewhat delayed as the tummy bug seems to have somehow morphed into what I can only assume is strep throat, so instead of hitting the yarn store while A is at school tomorrow we will hopefully be hitting the pediatrician and then the pharmacy in an attempt to return my vomiting, miserable child with a fever and sore throat back to her usual self. Ahhh, the joys of winter.

But, just because I'm not casting on shouldn't keep you from doing so. So go forth and knit on the Fibonacci Bag!

I have my yarn, but I will have to get some needles. I actually bought some really nice chunky yarn at the yarn store thinking that I would make a sweater for my son, but I think it is better put to use for the bag as it is a bit on the scratchy side.

I still have to get yarn, too. Hopefully today or tomorrow....

Hope everyone's feeling better at your house, Chichimama :)

I made the mistake of falling in love with brown and blue colors in the pattern yarn that I cannot find in my LYSs, so I'm waiting on a shipment to cast on....

I'm waiting for a shipment too, I decided that the likelihood of me making to the store before an order arrives was little to none...

Well, I placed my order with Royal Yarn on the 21st and it came in the mail today, so I'm casting on right now....

Ok, quick question here.

Can the yarn be any wool yarn and does it have to be chunky?

I could only find one yarn, in the certain store I went to, that is specific for felting (it is 100% wool and multicoloured, so it would eliminate my stripes).

ok, two questions, well three technicaly, is the pattern being knit back and forth on the circular needles or in the round? I think it is in the round, but I wanted to make sure. I am still a newbie here :).

Thanks.

It is knit in the round. And you can use any wool you want, a thinner yarn will require more stitches cast on and some adjustments to the pattern if you want the bag to be the same size as the pattern, but really you can make the bag as big or small as you want.

Make sure to do a gauge though if you care about the size. If you need help adjusting the pattern, give a holler once you figure out how many stitches and rows an inch you are getting...

Thanks Chichimama. Will start today and see where it gets me :)

Ok, here I am cast on and 32 stitches does not reach around the 24 inch circular needles. Am I the only one with this problem? Is my yarn just not chunky enough?

beachmama, I cast on the 32 stitches and then knit the 28 rows of garter stitch back and forth -- not in a circle. Then once I had done that, I picked up the 13 stitches along the shorter side, the other 32 stitches on the opposite side, and the last 13 stitches. It was a bit of a tight tug to knit the first few rows in the round on the 24" circular needle, but once I got past those first few rows, it seemed to get looser and knit up just fine.

Oh Thank you Jody!! I was wondering if I was missing something like that. I thought I would be able to figure it out, but it just wasn't coming to me.

Thanks again.

probably too late now, and I haven't read the directions carefully, but if there aren't enough stiches to use circular right away, use double points and then switch to circular once you have picked up enough to make it work.

Still waiting for my yarn. Twiddle, twiddle
